The Alpaiwalla Museum Internship Opportunities: Shape History, Understand the Past as an Intern, Docent and Documentarian

The F. D. Alpaiwalla Museum offers a comprehensive Internship and On-the-Job Training (OJT) program designed specifically for second-year (SY) and third-year (TY) BA students. The Museum’s hands-on opportunity, allows interns to actively contribute to vital museum operations, from public engagements, handling objects, to backend archival, preservation and documentation processes.
Academic Credits Under NEP 2020
Aligned with the National Education Programme (NEP 2020), this program welcomes students from diverse colleges across Mumbai.
- Duration: 60 hours of total On-the-Job Training.
- Academic Value: Earn 2 (two) university credits upon successful completion. A Two-Fold Learning Experience
The internship structure ensures you gain well-rounded experience by splitting your time between two critical museum departments:
Phase 1: Visitor Engagement & Docent Training
In the first half of your internship, you will develop public speaking and storytelling skills by training as a museum docent.
- Host diverse groups of visitors.
- Master the history and context behind our displayed artifacts.
- Curate and lead custom tours tailored to the group’s age, size, and interests.
Phase 2: Artefact Documentation & Cataloguing
In the second half, you will step behind the scenes to learn the foundational steps of becoming a professional museum documentarian. Working directly under the guidance of the Deputy Curator, and the Curatorial Assistant you will:
- Review and audit existing artefact documentation for accuracy.
- Utilize your digital and computer skills to compile and prepare new collection records.
- Assist with day-to-day back-office administrative tasks.
- Manage time-sensitive archival updates to keep the curator’s database current.
